HUNDIMIENTO

En  investigaciones anteriores, tras la colisión con un iceberg, la popa del Titanic primero se elevó unos 11 grados sobre el nivel del mar, es decir, que la inclinación era muy leve, dejando las hélices propulsoras al descubierto y fue hasta entonces que el barco se empezó a partir –sin que proa y popa se separaran– a la altura de la tercera chimenea, si bien todavía pasaron algunos minutos mientras el agua inundaba la sala de máquinas, uniendo de manera transitoria los extremos de la nave. Como el Titanic tenía una doble cubierta de acero, ésta también empezó a inundarse de manera que junto con el agua de la sala de máquinas estos hechos provocaron la partición, sólo que las partes chocaron entre sí, elevando la popa una vez más, mientras el quiebre de la nave se producía bajo el agua. Al final, proa y popa se desprendieron –siempre bajo el agua–, siendo ésta la última en hundirse.
 En la versión de Cameron, Titanic (1997), una de las escenas de mayor dramatismo ocurre cuando el barco se eleva exageradamente (unos 30 grados) y en seguida se parte sobre la superficie marina.
